Tuna, light-meat fish such as cod or halibut and shellfish reduce the likelihood of tinnitus, according to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston in the US, The Daily Mail reports.
A total of 73 thousand people participated in the respective study. The researchers studied the data about the diet of these volunteers, and paid special attention to their consumption of fish and seafood.
Also, the researchers collected information about tinnitus among these test subjects. People with this pathology hear noise or ringing in the ears without any external acoustic stimulus.
It was found that people who ate more than two portions of fish per week were 25 percent less likely to develop tinnitus than those who consumed this food less frequently. Moreover, tuna, light-meat fish such as cod or halibut and shellfish were all associated with lower tinnitus risk—but dark-meat fish like salmon and swordfish appeared to increase the tinnitus danger.
Fish oil supplements—commonly taken for their heart, brain and joint health properties—were also associated with a higher tinnitus risk.
Previous studies have connected diet and tinnitus risk—with high intakes of calcium, iron and fat believed to increase the danger—but the new study is the first to provide data over such a breadth of time.
