Chinese ophthalmologists have performed the world’s first remote subretinal injection surgery on a patient located more than 4,200 kilometers away, using a surgical robot, according to Sun Yat-sen University.
Doctors in Guangzhou operated on a patient in Urumqi, controlling the robotic arm remotely via a 5G connection.
“This surgery marks an important step toward the practical application of remote high-precision ophthalmic surgery in China,” said Lin Haotian, a representative of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University.
During the operation, the robot inserted a micro-needle into the patient’s eye in Urumqi, while specialists in Guangzhou precisely guided its movement to the required depth and injected the medication. The entire procedure took less than seven minutes.
