IJC: Poor Dental Health in Childhood May Affect Cardiovascular System in Adulthood

A large new study conducted by researchers at the University of Copenhagen suggests that poor dental and gum health in childhood may have long-term consequences for heart and vascular health in adulthood.

The findings were published in the International Journal of Cardiology.

An analysis of data from nearly 570,000 Danes born between the 1960s and 1970s revealed a statistical association between childhood dental problems and a higher likelihood of developing coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke after the age of 30.

The researchers used records from the National Child Dental Health Registry, which documented issues such as multiple cavities and severe gingivitis — inflammation of the gums accompanied by bleeding and pain.

These data were compared with medical records of cardiovascular diseases from the National Patient Registry through 2018. The results showed that individuals who had numerous cavities in childhood faced up to a 45% higher risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood, while those with pronounced gingivitis had up to a 41% higher risk compared to peers with healthier teeth and gums.

The scientists emphasize that this represents a correlation rather than proof of a direct cause-and-effect relationship: the study cannot claim that dental problems themselves cause heart disease. Nevertheless, the findings are consistent with the theory that inflammatory processes in the mouth may contribute to systemic inflammation in the body, affecting blood vessels and accelerating the development of atherosclerosis — the buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries.

The authors also accounted for factors such as participants’ educational level, which often reflects lifestyle and access to healthcare. Even after adjusting for these influences, the statistical link between childhood oral health and cardiovascular risks remained significant.
