Scientists Name the Most Effective Free Medicine in the World

March 22, 2026  13:10

Researchers from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) have published a study in the scientific journal Journal of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, confirming that physical activity significantly reduces the risk of disease and accelerates the body’s recovery.

The study involved adults from various professions, including office workers, laborers, students, and patients undergoing rehabilitation after illnesses.

Scientists found that even minimal activity—such as standing up from a chair or doing light stretching—triggers signaling molecules in the body that affect cellular metabolism, regeneration, and the immune system.

“The human body is inherently designed for movement,” said Professor Demitri Constantinou, a specialist in sports medicine. “Even a single day without activity causes measurable changes in the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.”

In addition, the research showed that preparing patients for surgery and supporting recovery through physical exercise reduces complications and speeds up rehabilitation.

Professor Philip Gradidge also emphasized that intense workouts are not necessary: 2,000–4,000 steps per day or light micro-movements are enough to improve both physical and emotional well-being.

The scientists concluded that regular physical activity is one of the most effective and accessible ways to prevent diseases and maintain health throughout life.
