A Hot Bath Before Bed Improves Sleep Quality Without Medication

March 24, 2026  23:33

Japanese researchers have concluded that a simple evening ritual—a hot bath—can significantly improve sleep in older adults. The results of the study were published in Sleep Health.

The study involved 2,252 participants with an average age of around 69 years. Analysis showed that those who regularly took a bath before bed experienced deeper sleep, fewer nighttime awakenings, and significantly fewer complaints of insomnia. In contrast, a regular shower did not produce the same effect.

The researchers also identified optimal conditions: the best results were observed when bath duration did not exceed 18 minutes and water temperature stayed below 41.7 °C (107 °F). The effect was especially pronounced during colder seasons.

The optimal time for the bath is 1–2 hours before sleep. Researchers explain that after a hot bath, the body releases heat more actively, which helps facilitate falling asleep.
