New Laser Heat Therapy Could Help Prevent Blindness from Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Researchers at Aalto University have developed an experimental laser-based treatment that uses controlled infrared heat to help prevent vision loss from dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults.

Instead of repairing damage after it occurs, the new approach aims to stimulate the eye’s natural protective and repair mechanisms at an early stage of the disease, before permanent vision loss develops.

AMD affects a large portion of the elderly population, with around one in three people over 80 showing signs of the condition. The dry form of AMD progresses gradually but can eventually damage central vision, making everyday tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces increasingly difficult.

The method developed by researchers involves gently heating retinal tissue using near-infrared laser light. The temperature increase is carefully controlled to avoid damage while activating the cells’ stress-response systems.

Scientists explain that aging cells lose efficiency in their protective functions, leading to oxidative stress and the buildup of toxic protein deposits known as drusen, a key marker of dry AMD.

The controlled heat is intended to trigger cellular defense mechanisms, including the production of heat shock proteins, which help repair misfolded proteins, and autophagy, a process that removes damaged cellular components.

Both processes act as natural “cleanup systems” that decline with age but are essential for maintaining retinal health.

The technique has already shown promising results in animal studies involving mice and pigs, where it successfully activated protective responses in retinal tissue without causing damage.

Human clinical trials in Finland are expected to begin in 2026, initially focusing on safety. Researchers emphasize that the treatment would likely need to be repeated over time to maintain its effect, as cellular responses diminish after a few days.

Experts describe the approach as part of a growing field of light-based therapies for eye diseases. While still experimental, similar technologies are already being explored or approved in limited clinical use for dry AMD.

If future trials confirm its safety and effectiveness, the treatment could offer a new preventive strategy to slow or stop vision loss before it becomes irreversible.
