A large-scale review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum has analyzed evidence from 16 systematic reviews, 113 clinical studies, and nearly 8,000 participants to evaluate the effectiveness of collagen supplements across multiple areas of health.
The work represents one of the most comprehensive assessments of collagen supplementation to date and helps clarify where benefits are supported by scientific evidence and where claims remain weak or unproven.
Collagen supplements are widely marketed in the health and beauty industry as products that improve skin quality, support joint health, enhance athletic performance, and accelerate recovery. However, the new analysis presents a more nuanced picture.
The strongest evidence was found in the area of skin health. Long-term collagen supplementation was associated with improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, as well as signs of reduced age-related skin changes.
Similarly, patients with osteoarthritis experienced reductions in pain and joint stiffness, particularly when supplements were taken over extended periods. These findings suggest that collagen may offer meaningful benefits for some individuals with degenerative joint conditions.
Researchers also identified several potential musculoskeletal benefits. Moderate improvements were reported in muscle mass, muscle structure, and tendon health. While these findings point to a possible role for collagen in supporting tissue integrity during aging, the overall magnitude of the effects was generally modest.
In contrast, the review found little convincing evidence that collagen improves athletic performance.
The analysis did not demonstrate significant benefits for post-exercise recovery, reduction of muscle soreness, or enhancement of tendon mechanical properties. These findings challenge many marketing claims that specifically target athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
Evidence regarding metabolic health and oral health was also less conclusive. Studies examining effects on cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood glucose, and gum health produced either conflicting results or evidence that was insufficient to support firm conclusions.
The authors noted that some newer clinical trials have reported stronger effects than earlier studies. This may reflect improvements in study design, differences in collagen formulations, or variations in dosage and source materials.
According to Lee Smith of Anglia Ruskin University, the findings provide a more balanced perspective on collagen supplementation. He noted that collagen should not be viewed as a universal solution, but it may offer genuine benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin health and osteoarthritis.
The researchers emphasize that further high-quality clinical trials are needed to determine optimal dosages, evaluate long-term outcomes, and better understand whether different sources and formulations of collagen produce different effects.
Overall, the review suggests that collagen supplementation has scientific support in certain areas—especially skin health and osteoarthritis management—but many broader claims commonly used in advertising remain either insufficiently supported or unproven by current evidence.
