Which Hot Drinks May Help You Live Longer?

July 21, 2026  19:03

Regular consumption of coffee, green tea, and black tea may be associated with a longer lifespan, according to scientists who analyzed data from several large-scale research studies, TechInsider reports.

Data from the UK Biobank suggest that people who drink one to two cups of coffee per day tend to have a longer life expectancy. Studies conducted in Asia have also found that individuals who consume up to five cups of coffee daily have a 28% lower risk of death from any cause, according to Planet Today. Researchers attribute these potential benefits to the effects of caffeine and polyphenols, compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Green tea has also been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. Its key bioactive compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), is believed to be responsible for many of these health benefits. A 2025 meta-analysis found that regular intake of EGCG was associated with a lower risk of developing several forms of cancer.

Regular consumption of black tea may help lower blood pressure and reduce levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol. It has also been associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline in older adults. People who drink more than two cups of black tea per day have been found to have a 9–13% lower risk of mortality.

Herbal teas may offer additional health benefits as well. Peppermint tea can help support digestive health, chamomile tea may improve sleep quality, and hibiscus tea has been shown to produce modest reductions in blood pressure.

Researchers also challenged the common belief that adding milk to tea or coffee reduces their health benefits, concluding that milk does not significantly diminish the positive effects of these beverages.
