Can the way we think transform our bodies in just one week? A new study suggests the answer may be yes. The findings were published in the journal Communications Biology.
Researchers found that simple mental practices, such as meditation, can rapidly alter brain activity, the body's chemistry, and even cellular behavior. These changes are not minor—they affect biological systems that play a key role in overall health.
Scientists from the University of California, San Diego investigated this powerful mind-body connection, according to Planet Today. Their findings suggest that intentional mental training can produce real, measurable changes throughout the body.
The study involved 20 healthy adults who participated in a seven-day retreat that combined meditation, lectures, and wellness activities. Participants spent many hours learning how the mind can influence the body and how focused attention can reshape perception.
The program integrated three key approaches. Meditation was used to strengthen attention, cognitive reframing helped participants change beliefs about their bodies and health, and healing rituals functioned similarly to open-label placebos, in which people know what is happening yet still experience genuine effects. Researchers wanted to examine what would happen when these methods were combined—an approach that had not previously been studied in depth.
Brain scans revealed clear changes following the retreat. Activity decreased in regions associated with excessive self-focus and overthinking. These areas are part of the brain's default mode network, which is typically active when the mind wanders.
The brain also became more efficient. Different regions communicated more flexibly, allowing information to flow more effectively. This meant participants' brains were better able to adapt to new situations and respond more efficiently. Meditation appeared to reduce rigid patterns of neural activity, enabling the brain to shift toward a more flexible and mindful state.
"We have known for years that practices such as meditation can influence health, but what is remarkable is that combining several mind-body practices within a single retreat produced changes across multiple biological systems that we were able to measure directly in both the brain and the blood," said study co-author Hemal H. Patel.
Significant biological changes were also observed. Blood analyses showed that cells became more efficient at producing energy, indicating that the body had improved the way it generates and uses fuel.
Researchers also found evidence of neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to grow and form new neural connections. When laboratory-grown nerve cells were exposed to blood samples collected from participants after the retreat, the cells grew longer and formed stronger connections.
Levels of several proteins associated with brain growth also increased. These proteins help neurons survive and establish new connections, supporting learning and memory. In addition, participants experienced metabolic changes, with cells relying more heavily on rapid energy production, which may help keep the brain alert and responsive during meditation.
The team also detected increased levels of the body's natural pain-relieving compounds, including beta-endorphin and dynorphin, which reduce pain and promote feelings of well-being.
At the same time, the immune system became more active. Both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signals increased, suggesting a balanced response rather than uncontrolled inflammation. Researchers believe this coordinated activation may help support healing, recovery, and healthier adaptation to stress.
"This study demonstrates that the mind and body are deeply interconnected—our beliefs, the way we focus our attention, and the practices we engage in can leave measurable biological signatures," said co-author Alex Jinich-Diamant.
Participants also reported profound psychological experiences. Many described feelings of unity, heightened awareness, and deep connectedness—experiences often referred to as mystical experiences. Those who reported more intense experiences also showed greater biological changes, including stronger brain connectivity and more pronounced physiological responses. This suggests that the depth of meditation may influence the extent of its effects on the body.
One particularly unexpected finding stood out. Brain activity patterns observed after meditation closely resembled those previously seen in people who had taken psychedelic substances, which are known to alter perception and consciousness. However, in this study, participants reached these states naturally through meditation alone, without the use of any drugs.
"We are observing the same mystical experiences and patterns of neural connectivity that typically require psilocybin, but they are now being achieved entirely through meditative practice," Patel said.
The findings suggest that the human mind possesses powerful tools for altering its own state. Researchers now plan to investigate whether similar programs could benefit people living with chronic pain, stress, or mental health disorders.
Overall, the study indicates that the mind and body function as an integrated system. Changes in thoughts, attention, and beliefs can simultaneously influence metabolism, immune function, and brain activity. Rather than being simply a relaxation technique, meditation may be capable of reshaping how the brain and body work together, making it a potentially powerful tool for improving health.
