The Stark method for caesarean section (also known as the Misgav Ladach method) has a number of advantages over traditional cesarean section methods, since it’s performed much faster and is less traumatic for the mother. Michael Stark, the author of this method, explained its key points and main differences in an interview to NEWS.am Medicine.
“I studied each step of the operation to find out whether it’s necessary or not, and if it’s necessary, what is the best way to perform it. As a result, we got a very short operation with a very few steps, doing only the very necessary ones,” Michael Stark told us.
So what are the main differences between the traditional caesarian section and the Stark method?
According to Mr. Stark, the main difference in hidden in the way the surgeon opens the abdomen and in the type of the incision he makes. Only the skin of the woman is cut, and then the surgeon uses his fingers to stretch the muscles and blood vessels without cutting anything else, which results in much less bleeding. Then another small incision is made on the uterus, and the baby is taken out.
The whole procedure lasts for only about 20-30 minutes, while the traditional caesarian section lasts much longer.
Michael Stark also told NEWS.am Medicine that they’ve done a lot of studies all over the world to find out if this method is truly effective. They discovered that the Stark method for caesarean section offers quicker birth thanks to the fact that a lot of conventional steps had been eliminated. It’s also less traumatic for the mother – it will take her less time to recover and start walking.
“We also found out that the time spent in the hospital is reduced, and there is less pain and less need for painkillers and very good outcome,” Michael Stark said.
Today the Stark method for caesarean section is used in more than 100 countries all over the world, and Armenia is one of those countries. Michael Stark told NEWS.am Medicine that many Armenian doctors use his method quite effectively, yet he wanted to make sure they do everything in the right way.
Michael Stark has come to Armenia to take part in the Obstetrics & Gynecology Conference that took place in Yerevan on June 9.
