Pill with probiotics can help lose weight, study shows

July 5, 2019  13:18

A team of researchers from Université catholique de Louvain, Brussels, created a pill with probiotics which can be an effective tool for losing weight.

The pill contains Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk), a species of bacteria that lives in the gut and has previously been linked to healthy metabolism, reduced obesity and lower blood glucose levels, The Age reported.

Twenty volunteers took the bug-filled-pill for three months. By the end of this period, volunteers could lose weight without changing their diet and without physical exercises.

After three months, their overall gut microbiome did not change that much. But there were some changes in the volunteers’ health. Those who took the pill had lower cholesterol levels and reduced risk factors for diabetes and heart disease.
