Oranges has substance that may be effective against COVID-19, experts say

November 25, 2020  15:54

Oranges contain an antiviral agent that can be effective against the new coronavirus, according to experts from the University of Egypt. This is a hesperidin, which, according to experts, can be used for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases, including COVID-19.

Hesperidin is found in the peel of citrus fruits, mainly oranges. It works as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, venotonic and cardioprotective agent. Together with another flavanoid, diosmin, hesperidin is used in the treatment of venous insufficiency.

Now experts have found a new use for hesperidin: it has been proven that it can block the entry of COVID-19 into host cells through the ACE2 receptors, which can prevent infection.

This substance also affects cellular immunity and produces anti-inflammatory effects, which together reduce the risk of developing a cytokine storm - a life-threatening phenomenon in which the immune system gets out of control.
