Coronavirus infection can indeed affect hearing: about 15% of COVID-19 patients experience hearing impairment in the largest systematic review of studies.
According to Medportal.ru, during the year, scientists at the Manchester Center for Audiology and Deafness collected data from all over the world on cases of hearing impairment among patients who had undergone coronavirus infection.
The updated version of the systematic review includes about 60 studies and reports that describe audiovestibular symptoms after COVID-19.
The analysis showed that between 7% and 15% of adult patients report hearing issues. Most often, those who have recovered complain of tinnitus - noise or ringing in the ears, which is often accompanied by dizziness.
About 7% of patients also reported another audiovestibular symptom - dizziness. This condition is characteristic of damage to the balance system in the inner ear. Several cases of complete deafness in one ear, often accompanied by tinnitus, have also been described.
