The U.S. state of Florida has seen an abnormal increase in cases of flesh-eating bacteria following the past Hurricane Ian.According to the county health department, at least 29 cases and four deaths have been reported in the county. The 27 cases were reported just after Hurricane Ian swept through Florida.The spread of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria was caused by flooding after the hurricane. The Department of Health recommends that residents always be aware of the potential risks associated with exposure to warm, brackish or salt water on open wounds or skin scratches.Vibrio vulnificus is reported to quickly cause necrotizing fasciitis when exposed to human skin. Amputation may even be required to stop the bacteria from spreading through the body. The infection causes fever, chills, and then a drop in blood pressure and the formation of blisters on the skin.The infection is especially dangerous for those who have chronic liver disease or are taking immunosuppressants. The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream, causing sepsis and leading to organ failure and sometimes death.
