EJPH: The risk of developing dementia is increased by seven factors

November 7, 2024  18:44

A study published in the European Journal of Public Health (EJPH) showed that the risk of developing dementia is increased by hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, low level of education, depression, loneliness, diabetes and smoking.

Scientists from Italy analyzed the lifestyle and health status of 130 thousand people. The results showed that the key role in the pathogenesis of this disease is played by high blood pressure. If the pressure is kept normal until the age of 65, the risk of dementia decreases by 6.3%.

This can be achieved through proper nutrition, physical activity and, if necessary, with the help of medication. Passive lifestyle after the age of 65, as noted by scientists, increases the risk of cognitive impairment by 5.9%, so it is recommended to exercise in any available format for brain health.

The study also found a link between education and the risk of dementia. Higher education reduces the likelihood of developing it by 5%. Psychological health is also important: depression after the age of 65 increases the risk of memory and attention problems by 4.5%. Isolation and loneliness also increase the threat of cognitive impairment by 4.4%, diabetes by 3.9%, and smoking by 2.4%.
