Allogeneic transplantation of bone marrow stem cells is performed on adult patient for first time in Armenia (VIDEO)

An allogeneic transplantation of bone marrow stem cells was performed on an adult patient for the first time in Armenia, announced the Ministry of Health of Armenia.
The patient was Lala Bakhtikyan. She was going to become a mother again three years after her son was killed in the 44-day war. Lala was 34 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Although the outcome of such transplantation is poor in 20 percent of cases and the acute lymphoblastic leukemia recurs in 15 to 20 percent of cases after allogeneic transplantation, the latter—a very complicated medical intervention beyond the reach of many countries' health systems—is still the only treatment option for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
