Researchers at Oxford University have developed a new blood test called TriOx that can detect early signs of six types of cancer, including cancers of the pancreas, ovaries and breast. The development is described in a research paper in Nature Communications (NatCom).
The TriOx technology uses machine learning to analyze DNA in the blood, which can detect even minimal signs of cancer cells. According to Professor Anna Schuh, lead researcher on the project, the test analyzes the entire tumor genome, which increases its accuracy.
Preliminary tests have confirmed the high (94.9%) sensitivity and specificity (88.8%) of the tool. These results indicate that the use of TriOx reduces the likelihood of false results and the prescription of unnecessary procedures.
The test is based on TAPS technology, which is combined with machine learning algorithms to ensure accurate detection of cancerous DNA.
Scientists noted that detecting and treating cancer at an early stage significantly increases the chances of recovery and reduces the burden on medical systems. The researchers are continuing trials on other types of cancer to make the test suitable for mass use.
