Researchers from Suzhou University (China) have confirmed that additional hours of sleep on weekends contribute to slowing down the aging process and reducing the likelihood of developing various diseases, including dementia. The results of the scientific work were published in the Journal of Suzhou University (JSU).
The study involving volunteers showed that one or two additional hours of sleep on Saturday and Sunday can partially compensate for the lack of night rest accumulated during the working week. People who use the weekend to recover are 34% less likely to age prematurely and have a 70% reduced risk of developing dementia compared to those who are sleep deprived on a regular basis.
Researchers added that extra sleep helps reduce inflammation in the body, which plays a key role in preventing neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Numerous studies also confirm that adequate rest improves immune system function.
However, researchers emphasize that making up for a lack of sleep only on weekends is not always effective. Abrupt changes in sleep patterns can lead to sleep inertia, which negatively affects concentration and attention. Experts recommend aiming for a stable sleep schedule and providing the body with at least seven to eight hours of rest each night.
