Radiation therapy for skin cancer: when is it used?

July 11, 2025  10:30

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. In most cases, the main method of treatment is surgery. However, there are situations when surgery is impossible or undesirable — in such cases, modern radiation therapy is used. The decision on how to treat skin cancer is made on an individual basis, depending on the location of the tumor, its stage, and the patient's overall condition.

In complex anatomical areas — on the face, around the ears, eyelids, or nose — surgical treatment often involves cosmetic difficulties. In such cases, doctors choose targeted radiation rather than a scalpel.

Radiation therapy can be performed in two ways: remotely, using a linear accelerator, or locally, in the form of brachytherapy, when the radiation source is placed as close as possible to the tumor.
