A new study presented at the American Psychological Summit and reported by MedicalXpress suggests that a common kitchen spice may hold potential as a supportive tool in diabetes treatment.
The focus is on curcumin—the active compound in turmeric, long known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Scientists have now found that it may have broader effects in diabetes, including impacts on the vascular system and metabolism.
In an experiment involving rats with induced type 1 diabetes, researchers compared animals treated with curcumin to a control group. After just one month, the treated animals showed significant improvement in vascular condition, approaching the levels seen in healthy subjects. This is particularly important because vascular damage in diabetes often leads to serious complications, including cardiovascular disease.
Scientists note that curcumin acts on several biological processes simultaneously: it reduces inflammation, helps normalize the function of vascular cells, influences signaling proteins disrupted in diabetes, and improves calcium regulation in vascular tissue. Together, these effects may slow the progression of damage associated with high blood sugar levels.
However, the researchers emphasize an important limitation: the study was conducted on animals, and it is still too early to draw conclusions about clinical use in humans. In addition, curcumin has low bioavailability in the body, meaning that specialized delivery methods and clinical trials will be needed to achieve potential therapeutic effects.
