Smell, Don’t Eat: Dark Chocolate Aroma Surprisingly Boosts Workout Performance

The aroma of dark chocolate before exercise may do more than improve mood—it could also enhance physical performance. That is the conclusion of researchers from the University of Malaya, whose study was published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology.

The scientists found that inhaling the scent of dark chocolate with a high cocoa content reduced feelings of hunger, decreased the desire to eat, and increased feelings of fullness. In addition, participants were able to complete more repetitions during resistance exercises without perceiving the workout as more strenuous.

"Exposure to the aroma of chocolate immediately before exercise and between sets significantly increased the total amount of work performed without increasing the participants' perceived level of fatigue," said the study's lead author, Dr. Mohamed Nashrudin bin Naharudin.

The experiment involved 23 healthy men aged approximately 20 to 25 years who exercised regularly. Before performing a leg extension exercise, participants inhaled one of three scents: liquid dark chocolate containing 90% cocoa, milk chocolate containing 60% cocoa, or odorless water as a control.

Before the workout and throughout the exercise sets, researchers assessed participants' hunger levels, feelings of fullness, desire to eat, and intention to consume food in the near future.

The results showed that the aroma of dark chocolate had the strongest effect on appetite. Participants reported feeling less hungry, experiencing a lower desire to eat, and feeling more satisfied after inhaling the scent. Although the smell of milk chocolate was rated as more pleasant, it had little impact on hunger-related sensations.

The chocolate aroma also influenced exercise performance. After exposure to the scent of 90% dark chocolate, participants completed approximately 18 more repetitions in the leg extension exercise compared with the control condition. The aroma of milk chocolate resulted in an increase of about nine additional repetitions.

The researchers believe the effect may be linked to how the brain processes familiar food-related cues. The smell of food can trigger expectations of eating and activate physiological responses similar to those that occur after food consumption.

According to the researchers, the aroma of dark chocolate may act as a kind of "satiety signal." The brain may associate its bitter aroma and high cocoa content with a nutrient-rich food, prompting the body to enter a state of anticipated fullness before eating.

Milk chocolate appears to work differently. Its sweeter aroma is more likely to create a pleasant emotional atmosphere and enhance enjoyment of exercise rather than directly influencing physiological hunger.
