California mom gives birth to 13 pound newborn

Jenna Reyes said she’s used to giving birth to big babies, but her past deliveries don’t compare to that of her newborn son who weighs more than 13 pounds.

“Oh my gosh, he looks like a toddler. He’s so big,” Reyes said.

Baby Raymond was born on April 30 at the Mercy Medical Center in Merced, California weighing a whopping 13.5 pounds.

He’s one of the heaviest babies born in Northern California, even shocking some nurses at the hospital.

"I worked in labor delivery for about seven years and the largest baby I’ve ever seen was a little bit over 10 pounds. So, 13 pounds is a big baby. I’ve never seen one that big,” said Jessica Newton, Family Birth Center nurse.

Reyes decided to have a C-section early on because she was expecting a 10 to 11-pound baby. That, of course, changed in the delivery room.

Her 13-pound newborn experienced minor complications that required him to be placed in the neonatal intensive care unit. He received treatment for infant jaundice and low sodium and calcium levels.

“Coming home to an empty crib is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Reyes. “No mother wants to come home without her baby.”

Raymond is now healthy and at home. His sister, Nathalie, is happy to finally be a big sister. She's even promised to change diapers. But there is one thing she says she won't share: her title.

"I'm still the baby girl of the house."

Reyes said Raymond will be her last baby. He’s grandchild number 23 on his dad’s side
