Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, conducted a study that found that two-thirds of people who have suffered severe COVID-19 experience a deterioration in their health after one year.

According to the study published in the journal Critical Care Medicine, 64 per cent of respondents experienced a variety of impairments including physical (57 per cent), respiratory (49 per cent, of which 19 per cent required supplemental oxygen), psychiatric (24 per cent) and cognitive impairment (15 per cent).

In addition, the researchers found that 78.7 per cent of patients did not return to their normal state after their illness. Experts emphasised that the long-term effects recorded in the study are not only characteristic of COVID-19, but also of any serious disease, and recommend that they be treated with multidisciplinary rehabilitation.

Importantly, this analysis shows the importance of further study of the long-term health consequences of coronavirus infection in patients.
