Kinky sex is much more common than you think: Harvard study

Anyone who thinks attending Harvard University is an all-work, no-play proposition needs to check out the results of a sex survey conducted there by erotic toy maker CalExotics.

The research project was headed up by the West Coast company’s resident sexologist, Jill McDevitt, Ph.D.

Coinciding with the annual Harvard Sex Week, the study invited students to consider how open-minded they are now — and how out-there they want to get in the future.

For instance, when asked about their attitudes toward fetishes, 22 percent responded “yes please” and 40 percent acknowledged being intrigued. When asked if they have fetishes or believe that they do, 43 percent answered in the affirmative.

And if you wonder why Harvard alumni — who include Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg and Matt Damon — seem to run the world, the answer may exist in their sexual proclivities: Favorite fetishes were humiliation and power. Forty-six percent of those questioned have engaged in B&D/S&M.

When it comes to full-on sex, 40 percent of the students surveyed have tried anal and 24 percent have engaged in orgies or threesomes.

While the subject matter was clearly juicy, the Harvard students still operated in the style that you would expect from elite Ivy Leaguers.

They were, says McDevitt, “able to step back and engage the material in an academic way, challenging their own biases and asking smart questions.”

The statements weren’t too bad either. Considering the breadth of sexual activities and preferences out there, one student said, “If it’s not hurting anyone, then it’s OK.”

Here are some of the top kinks:

Tried anal sex: 40 percent

Participated in threesomes or orgies: 24 percent

Favorite fetishes: Humiliation and power

Participated in sessions of B&D/S&M: 46 percent

Prefer being submissive: 65 percent

Orgasmed with a sex toy: 58 percent

Told a partner about a fetish: 53 percent

Engaged in oral sex: 91 percent

Never had an orgasm: 8 percent
