Skin rash could be a sign of lung cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most serious types of cancer to be diagnosed, as it’s usually difficult to spot until it has spread to other parts of the body. But, it’s also one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in the UK, warned the NHS. Signs of the disease only tend to reveal themselves once the cancer has spread through the lungs. But you could be at risk of deadly lung cancer symptoms if you notice a blue/violet-coloured rash on your skin, it’s been claimed. The rash is most likely to be found around the eyelids, but could also develop on the arms or legs.

“Lung cancer causes several types of symptoms, including generalised, whole body symptoms such as fatigue and weight loss,” said the medical website.

“Lung cancer also causes symptoms from the invasion of the tumour into normal tissues, as well as symptoms related to various hormone-like compounds produced by the tumour. These processes can produce visible changes in the skin.

“The muscle weakness is progressive, and tends to occur in and around the hips and shoulders equally on both sides of the body.

“The rash is red to violet and may have blue patchy discolouration. It most commonly occurs over the eyelids and around the eyes, but may also occur on the hands, arms, legs and trunk.”

The rash can sometimes be very itchy, and is often made worse by sunlight. That’s why it’s more obvious on areas of the skin that’s exposed to the sun.

After symptoms have set in, patients may also develop severe muscle weakness, added the British Association of Dermatologists.

It’s caused by inflammation affecting the muscles, which can make it difficult to lift the arms above the head, or even to walk up stairs.
