Famous heart surgeon: Coronary artery stent surgeries in Armenia are at level of many European countries

About 6,000 surgeries on coronary artery stent are performed annually in Armenia, and by the number of stenting, Armenia is now at the level of many European countries, famous heart surgeon Bagrat Alekyan, chief specialist of the Russian Health Ministry on X-ray endovascular diagnosis and treatment, said in an interview with NEWS.am Medicine.

Armenia will be able to reach their level by increasing the number of operations conducted here by 50%. Today Armenia is at the level of many other European countries, and this, according to a specialist, is “fantastic indicator”.

More than a quarter of the stenting operations in the country are performed at the Erebuni Medical Center. It is not excluded that this figure will only grow in the foreseeable future, since recently a new operating room has been opened in this center, thanks to which it is possible to increase the volume of operations.

“One operating room for endovascular operations for such a large hospital was, of course, not enough. Imagine the situation: a planned patient is in the operating room, and here another patient is brought with an acute heart attack. A planned patient has to be taken out of the operating room, giving way to another, because there is no heart attack and no pull. But now these operations in Erebuni are already being performed in two operating rooms, and this is excellent,” he said.

Dr. Alekyan quite often comes to Armenia and during each visit he goes to Erebuni Medical Center, where he helps with difficult cases and shares his knowledge and experience with local doctors.

“There are very talented guys here who quickly master everything and do very complex operations at the proper level. I plan to continue to cooperate with them and this cooperation is important for all of us,” he added.

Armenia has the most modern equipment, he said adding that stents are also used by the most up-to-date ones.
