Father becomes donor for his son, Armenia’s first liver transplant to child goes successful

October 23, 2019  15:55

The first transplantation of a liver in Armenia to a minor patient has been carried out in Yerevan, the head of the medical center Ara Baloyan told reporters.

The patient is 10 years and 8 months old. He suffers from congenital liver fibrosis - a dangerous disease that would kill him in the coming months without liver transplantation. The donor for the patient was his father, who gave him part of his liver.

The operation lasted about 14.5 hours, and a group of 22 specialists worked on it, seven of which came to Armenia from Belarus, a country with a very developed transplantology. They conducted the operation together with Armenian specialists, training them and sharing their experience.

According to experts, it is still difficult to say how things will go with a 10-year-old patient after recovery.
