If a person eats a lot of white bread and sausages, this increases the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration in his retina, British Journal of Ophthalmology reported referring to a study.

According to the study, the likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration increases three times in people who often eat red and processed meats, refined cereals and dairy products with high fat content.

A macula lutea (macula) is the area of the retina that is responsible for the most acute vision. Its age-related degeneration (macular degeneration) is a common cause of central vision loss. Because of this problem, people lose their ability to drive, read, and even recognize faces.

The authors of the study emphasize that treating age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is difficult and expensive, and sometimes simply impossible. Therefore, its prevention is very important.

According to the study, the risk of developing ARMD is increased by the so-called Western food style, in which there is a lot of red and processed meat, refined cereal products and fatty dairy products. But this diet is not associated with the development of an early form of the disease.
