Vitamin C may help prevent age-related muscle loss, research claims

August 28, 2020  21:19

Vitamin C may be the key to improving muscle health in old age, said researchers at the University of East Anglia.

According to Medical Express, scientists have found that older adults who consume a lot of vitamin C - from citrus fruits, berries, and vegetables - have more skeletal muscle mass.

Usually, with age, a person's muscle mass decreases, which significantly reduces the quality of life and threatens the development of a number of diseases. People over 50 years of age lose up to 1% of skeletal muscle each year, and it is believed that over 50 million people worldwide suffer from this.

After analyzing data from more than 13,000 people aged 42 to 82 years, scientists have concluded that if a person's diet is high in vitamin C, it helps protect cells and tissues of the body from harmful free radicals that can destroy muscle tissue and accelerate the aging process.
