Research says: People with hidden COVID-19 to develop immunity

December 25, 2020  14:23

People who had COVID-19 infection in a mild or hidden form also develop immunity, the scientists from Queen Mary University of London (UK) noted. Their research was published in the journal Science Immunology.

They analyzed blood samples from 136 medical personnel for antibodies and T-lymphocytes. All of the workers have experienced mild or asymptomatic COVID-19. Neutralizing antibodies were found in 89% of them 16-18 weeks after infection. Most of them had also T-cells targeting different parts of the virus.

Some people had T-lymphocytes but no antibodies, while others had the opposite. Moreover, a relatively high level of protective antibodies was found in 66% of medical personnel. T-cell responses tended to be more extreme in people with the classic symptoms of COVID-19, while asymptomatic infection led to weaker T-cell immunity.
