COVID-19 may negatively affect intestinal microflora, specialist claims

May 18, 2021  17:41

In people who carry the virus in a severe form, the intestinal microflora is noticeably affected, according to the British scientist, a specialist in epidemiological research in genetics Tim Spector.

On the other hand, the state of the gut microbiome could provide protection against COVID-19 and other diseases, the scientist noted.

According to him, in people who were admitted to hospital with a coronavirus infection, the intestinal microbiome was severely damaged, so it can be concluded that there is a connection between the virus and the violation.

According to the specialist, one of the functions of the microbiome is to maintain the human immune system. At the same time, the microbiome prevents the body from overreacting to external factors.

Risk factors for the intestinal microflora, according to the specialist, can be overweight, diabetes, social problems and lack of a balanced diet. Products that have undergone technological processing or contain a lot of sugar and salt are also harmful to the human body.
