The position in which a person sleeps can affect whether or not they snore. In particular, people who fall asleep on their back snore more often than those who sleep in other positions, sleep specialist Narwan Amini said.
According to her, to avoid snoring, it is advisable to fall asleep lying on your side. If a person sleeps on his back, gravity presses his tongue against the mouth, creating blockage of airways, which in turn leads to snoring.
The expert also advised to drink more fluids during the day, as this alleviates congestion in the mouth and throat at night.
"Don't rest your chin on your chest or keep your head down as this can block your airways and make it difficult to breathe. Keep your arms at your waist or parallel to your sides. If you have joint pain in this position, try putting a pillow between your knees to align your spine and relieve lower back pain," said Amini.
Experts from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) warn that snoring can also occur as a result of being overweight. In this case, the tissue around the neck and throat increases, making it more likely that the airways will become blocked during sleep. This can be corrected by losing some extra weight.
