How can ultrasound increase chances of pregnancy?

February 16, 2022  21:40

High-frequency ultrasound can be an effective method of increasing sperm motility and increasing the chances of successful conception, Australian scientists from Monash University say.

WHO estimates that the number of infertile people in the world reaches 186 million. Low sperm motility, their inability to effectively move through the genital tract of a woman is a frequent cause of low male fertility.

Scientists have found that sperm treated with high-frequency ultrasound travel 30% faster through a woman's fallopian tube. Moreover, after 20-second exposure to ultrasound, the very number of motile sperm also increased by 30%.

Currently, invasive treatment with pentoxifylline was the only alternative way to correct such problems. However, this procedure itself carries risks, in addition, the cells treated with this chemical quickly die.

Ultrasound treatment may become a more affordable and safer alternative to invasive procedures.

According to scientists, sperm motility can be significantly increased during 5-50 seconds of high-frequency ultrasound. Sperm is supposed to be processed during IVF procedures - such treatment can be easily integrated into standard medical protocols.
