What heart disease can threaten people with allergies?

April 15, 2022  15:48

Allergic people are at higher risk of developing hypertension and heart disease than people without allergies, scientists from Shenzhen University (China) said.

The experts studied data from 10,000 people aged 18-57. Each of the participants in the project suffered from some type of allergy, food, skin or respiratory. Observations and examinations of the subjects showed that allergy sufferers age 39 and older were at the highest risk for cardiovascular health problems. In particular, people with allergies were found to be prone to hypertension and coronary heart disease.

According to scientists, such vulnerability of allergy sufferers can be explained by treatment with antihistamines, or more precisely, their side effects. These drugs can constrict blood vessels, which increases blood pressure on their walls. Given this feature of antihistamines, scientists advise people with allergies who take them to examine their hearts for possible ischemia.
