How does physical activity affect depression?

April 15, 2022  21:40

Exercise can affect the course and development of depression, new study published in the scientific journal JAMA Psychiatry reported.

Experts from the Cambridge University School of Clinical Medicine (UK) analyzed the results of 15 studies with data on exercise and depressive disorders in 191,000 subjects. As it turned out, about 12% of cases of depression could be prevented with exercise.

The study found that people who did brisk walking for at least 2.5 hours a week were less likely to get a depressive disorder than those who did no exercise at all.

In addition, people who did at least half the recommended amount of physical activity had an 18% lower risk of developing depression. And those who did all of the recommendations had a 25 percent lower risk of developing depression.
