Can loneliness be 'reflected' in blood?

June 7, 2022  22:37

Japanese scientists have found that loneliness can be "reflected" in the blood.

Researchers analyzed blood samples from 83 people and found specific compounds in those who suffer from "extreme social loneliness".

They were found to have high levels of long-chain acylcarnitine, a fat associated with heart problems. The single men also had low levels of bilirubin and arginine, which has been linked to depression.

The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Dialogues In Clinical Neuroscience, note that this is "the first step in uncovering the biological roots of this condition."
