What vitamin can prevent major danger of diabetes?

For those with diabetes, it is especially important to know that there is a very good reason why they should watch out for sufficient vitamin D in their diet.

In the study, the results of which were published in the journal Research Square, researchers examined 339 patients from the endocrinology department of the Special Medical Center in Beijing. All of the patients, aged 60 to 90, had type 2 diabetes, and 204 of them had diabetic foot ulcers.

After reviewing the available data, the researchers found that 80.5% of all patients had low vitamin D levels. In addition, 85% of patients with diabetic foot ulcers were vitamin D deficient, and another 13% had vitamin D levels that were not high enough to be considered adequate. Only 2% of people with foot ulcers had enough vitamin D in their bodies.

"The results come as no surprise to me because vitamin D plays a key role in reducing inflammation and maintaining immune health," nutritionist told Eat This, Not That!

She explained that "as with any wound, there is a possibility of infection. At the same time, a person with vitamin D deficiency may lack the immune strength needed to reliably defend against infection, which can worsen a diabetic foot ulcer as it progresses from an early stage of inflammation to tissue death or gangrene due to infection.

This is why a nutritionist advises people with diabetes, especially the elderly, to get tested for vitamin D deficiency and discuss with your doctor the advisability of taking vitamin D supplements.
