Doctors create drug against sleep apnea
The antidepressant Reboxetine can relieve the severity of sleep apnea. Researchers at Flinders University have come to this conclusion. And their respective article was published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
Accordingly, the combination of Reboxetine and Oxybutynin may be effective in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This was known from earlier researches.
A new double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter study among 16 people has found that Reboxetine alone can relieve sleep apnea severity. It reduced the number of respiratory arrests and also increased the oxygen level. Addition of Oxybutynin did not produce additional improvement.
About one billion people in the world suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The “gold” standard of its treatment is the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, but sometimes it is ineffective or inconvenient.
According to the researchers, their work opens a new way for the development of drugs that will be able to be accepted by patients who cannot undergo the CPAP therapy.
