Hymen restoration "is not a hoax, it's an adjustment to the situation" – Armenian gynecologist

The number of women applying for hymenoplasty (hymen restoration) in Armenia has not increased, simply there are more conversations about it, told the gynecologist and specialist of hymenoplasty,  Academician of the Russian Academy of Medicine and technology, Ara Hovakimyan. In an interview with NEWS.am Medicine the doctor said that today they speak more about restoring virginity because of the anonymity of the procedure, so many have the impression that in Armenia, a great number of women go to a specialist for hymenoplasty.  

According to Ara Hovakimian women resort to hymen reconstruction surgery for various reasons: for example, the bride and groom have been close enough, used to live together, but they have such relatives who want to see the "red spot" on their first wedding night. «Often there is another reason when she once loved and was loved, she had sex with a beloved man, but fate was such that the couple broke up, and the new young man and future husband demands from the girl that she was innocent», tells the doctor. According to him, it is "not a hoax, but just a girl adjusts to the situation". In practice, there were also other interesting cases of, say, a woman being married for several years, decided to make her husband a holiday "surprise" in the form of virginity.

«Hymenoplasty was not invented in Armenia, it is applied in different countries, and Russia is not an exception», noted doctor Hovakimyan. There are mostly young girls who turn to specialists to solve such a «problem».

On the question of whether there is a risk of infection during this type of surgery, the doctor said that ''it is an operation that is done in appropriate circumstances in complete sterilization and aseptic technique like other operations." The doctor said that any operation can be accompanied by complications, and Hymenoplasty is not an exception.

According to the doctor, there are two ways to restore virginity: short and long term. The short-term operation is done, when within a few days there should be coitus. Doctors are doing some manipulations, after which the wedding night is accompanied by "blood." But maximum in 7 days the made hymen diverges, and the woman will not have the desired effect. The long-term method is harder, but few people know about it. However, the woman, even five years after the operation can again "lose virginity."
