How many Armenian medical workers have passed the certification process?

As of today, 28,130 medical workers in Armenia have been certified by the National Center for Certification of Professional Activity of the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Armenia, the National Health Institute told NEWS.am Medicine.

In total, the center has received about 30,000 applications. 570 packages are currently being reviewed by commissions, about 1,000 packages are ready for review and about 300 packages need additional review.

The credit system of continuous professional development of health workers was introduced in Armenia by amendments to the law on medical care and service to the population, which came into force on May 4, 2016. This system involves a five-year cycle, and the first five years expired in 2021. However, because of the coronavirus pandemic and the 2020 war, it was decided to postpone the certification of Armenian health care workers until 2023.

It has been repeatedly stated over the past year that those healthcare workers who do not accumulate the required number of continuing professional development credits by January 1, 2023 and are not certified for the next five years will be disqualified from working.

On that basis, is it possible that health care workers who apply but are not yet certified will lose their jobs? The National Institute of Health replied that health care workers who have applied but have not yet received the certificate themselves receive a certificate from the National Certification Center stating that they are in the process of certification.

The institute also said that the Center is still accepting applications. Perhaps now the applicants are those workers who are just going to look for a job. As for firing uncertified health care workers, this is not a function of the Health Institute. This issue is handled by the Health and Labor Inspectorate.

Accordig to the statistics there are about 40,000 health care professionals in Armenia, but actually there are 30,000 applications. As the Health Institute explained, many health workers work in several places and are included in the statistics from all places of work, so this does not mean that 10,000 health workers are left out of this process.
