An American man has a tapeworm in his brain

March 16, 2024  08:45

The American Journal of Case Reports told the story of a 52-year-old American from Florida who had been suffering from severe headaches for several months.

At first, doctors suspected that the man had a migraine, but a CT scan showed that the man's brain was infected with parasites: larvae of the pig tapeworm formed cysts on both sides of the brain, writes Bild.

The medical term for this unusual parasite infestation is neurocysticercosis. The most common cause of this disease is excessive consumption of undercooked and contaminated pork.

In the case of the Florida patient, according to the American Journal of Case Reports, the cause was undercooked breakfast bacon that he ate every day.

Neurocysticercosis leads to the hospitalisation of about 1,000 Americans each year, according to the US health service CDC. In Germany, for example, such cases are virtually unheard of - not least because of mandatory meat inspection.
