Nature: mouth bacteria found in half of intestinal tumours

March 21, 2024  20:20

Half of patients with colorectal (colon and rectal) cancer have elevated numbers of the bacterium Fusobacterium ucleatum. A test for this microbe could be useful in screening and treating tumours, say the authors of a paper in Nature.

Fusobacterium ucleatum is commonly found in the mouth. Analysis of tumours from 200 patients showed that this bacterium in colorectal cancer can move into the colon and grow inside the tumour. This was made possible by 195 new genetic features that allowed the bacterium to survive the acidic environment of the stomach and gain a foothold in the intestine.

The microbe was found in half of the tumour samples. In addition, patients with this bacterium in their tumours had lower survival rates and responded worse to treatment.

A test for the abundance of this bacterium could be a screening tool for colorectal cancer, and could also better predict a patient's chances of cure. It is also possible that drugs aimed at killing the microbe could improve the survival rate of patients with bowel cancer.
