Healthday: Anti-epilepsy drugs used during pregnancy have been linked to autism

March 25, 2024  10:36

Anticonvulsant drugs may increase the risk of babies developing autism during their mothers’ pregnancy, Healthday reported.

Using data from medical records about drug prescriptions, researchers identified pregnant women who may have used anticonvulsant drugs. The prevalence of autism among their children was compared with the children of mothers who did not use such drugs during pregnancy.

At eight years of age, the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders was 1.9 percent for 4 million children who were not exposed to anticonvulsant drugs during intrauterine development.

The frequency of autism was 4.2 percent among the children of women with epilepsy who did not take drugs.

Among those whose mothers took anticonvulsant drugs during pregnancy, the frequency of autistic disorders was 4 to 10.5 percent, depending on the type of drug.

The highest probability of autism was associated with the use of the drug valproate.
