ESC: hypertension medications can be taken both in the morning and in the evening

Researchers from the University of Alberta (Canada) have found that taking blood pressure-lowering drugs in the evening has no advantages over taking them in the morning. The results of the study are presented on the website of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Scientists have long known that blood pressure usually changes according to a circadian rhythm, peaking after waking and decreasing during sleep. Major cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction and stroke, are more associated with a rise in blood pressure at night. The researchers set out to find out whether taking hypertension medications at certain times of day could improve the effectiveness of the drugs and keep you healthy.

To do this, they analyzed data from primary care patients who were prescribed at least one antihypertensive medication. A total of 3,357 adult volunteers participated in the study, with an average age of 67 years. An additional experiment included information on another 776 subjects.

The participants were divided into two groups for evening and morning medication. After that, observation of the cardiovascular health of the volunteers began. The results showed that taking the medication in the evening showed no clinical benefits. The scientists added that there was no significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of hospitalizations, cardiovascular events, efficacy and treatment outcomes.
