EatingWell: aloe vera tea can cause blood sugar to drop dramatically

October 1, 2024  15:11

Aloe vera tea can trigger a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels in diabetics who take medication. This is what American nutritionist Erin Palinski-Wade told the publication EatingWell.

The specialist explained that the aloe vera plant is able to significantly reduce blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. Such properties were discovered through multiple studies. According to Palinski-Wade, abuse of aloe vera tea can enhance the effects of medications that people with diabetes take to control sugar concentrations.

This, in turn, can trigger hypoglycemia, an acute condition in which blood glucose levels fall below 3.3 to 3.5 mmol/L. Hypoglycemia is characterized by weakness, fainting and loss of strength, and in severe cases - disruption of the brain and internal organs.

Herbal tea with fenugreek has a similar effect. Chamomile tea should also be used with caution. It is not recommended for diabetics taking warfarin - a blood-thinning drug. The combination of the active ingredients of the drink and the drug may increase the risk of bleeding.
