American Journal of Preventive Medicine: Moderate exercise during leisure time reduces risk of developing type 2 diabetes, study shows

February 19, 2025  14:06

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen have found that moderate to vigorous physical activity during leisure time significantly reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, physical activity during work does not provide the same protective effect. The study was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The team studied data from 5,866 working adults aged 30 to 60. Participants completed medical surveys and answered questions about their physical activity during work and leisure time between 1996 and 2020.

The findings showed that sports, walking and other physical activity during leisure time reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But a sedentary lifestyle during leisure time, combined with physical work, increases the risk of developing this illness. In addition, even considerable physical activity at work does not protect against diabetes.

The researchers stressed that current recommendations from the World Health Organization do not take into account the differences in physical activity during work and leisure, and this could be misleading, creating the impression that any type of activity is equally beneficial.

Also, the aforesaid researchers have called for a review of recommendations on physical activity, emphasizing the importance of leisure time in preventing diabetes and some other illnesses.
