30-year-old woman's burning feet turn out to be symptom of parasites in her brain

A young woman was shocked when she was diagnosed with parasites in her brain during a visit to the doctor due to leg pain.

The 30-year-old patient was initially diagnosed in the US, but it is believed that she may have contracted the parasite during trips to Thailand, Japan, or Hawaii.

According to available data, it is not ruled that the woman was infected with a deadly parasitic infection known as angiostrongyliasis, which is spread by the larvae of the Angiostrongylus worm when eating unwashed vegetables. 

This disease begins in the lungs of rodents, then spreads to snails and other mollusks.

It is believed that the mollusks are able to crawl on vegetables, leaving parasite, which the patient then swallowed.

The parasite, once in her body, is thought to have been dormant for 12 days before she began showing symptoms, including a burning sensation in her legs.

After tests revealed larvae in her brain and she was diagnosed with angiostrongyliasis, she underwent two weeks of treatment and survived.

This clinical case was later published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
