Dangers of popular acne creams named

One of the most popular and effective means of fighting acne are creams with benzoyl peroxide. However, they can be dangerous if improperly stored or used, Vladislav Sepp, associate professor of the Department of Pharmacy at the Institute of Pharmacy and Medical Chemistry of Pirogov University, told Gazeta.Ru.

“The danger to human health are the decomposition products of benzoylperoxide. At high temperatures, under the influence of UV radiation (for example, direct exposure to sunlight), this substance can release benzene or active radicals. Active radicals are also formed during the therapeutic action of this substance, it is through their release of benzoyl peroxide removes excess sebum, cleans pores, oxidizes the cell wall of bacteria and thereby destroys them. But in case of excessive release of active radicals, skin damage can occur,” the doctor explained.

Contact with benzene, which is carcinogenic and quite toxic substance, even in microdoses is highly undesirable for a person using cosmetic or medicinal products.

“If all regulations are followed, the risk of benzene is minimal. However, if you do not want to take risks, you can replace this active ingredient with others. Then you need to pick up cosmetics with salicylic and azelaic acid, retinoids or tea tree oil. Before selecting acne products, it is better to consult a doctor,” advised Sepp.
