11-Year-Old Boy Dies After Swimming in Thermal Pool Due to Rare Amoebic Infection
According to the German outlet Bild, a tragic incident occurred in the town of Štúrovo, Slovakia. An 11-year-old boy died after being infected with a rare protozoan organism —Naegleria fowleri, also known as the “brain-eating amoeba.” The child had been attending a swimming lesson at the Vadas Thermal Resort, where the infection is believed to have occurred.
A few days after swimming, the boy developed symptoms of a severe brain infection. Doctors diagnosed him with amoebic meningoencephalitis — a disease caused by the amoeba entering through the nasal passages and spreading to the brain. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this infection, and the child had no chance of survival.
Experts report that Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater and becomes active at temperatures above 25°C. It is often found in hot springs and thermal pools. In response to the incident, all pools at the Vadas resort were temporarily closed for sanitary inspections.
