People wash their hair incorrectly in summer: Experts tell about hidden risk

June 29, 2025  08:40

Most people in the world wash their hair once or several times a week, regardless of the season. However, experts say that such a hair washing regimen is not at all suitable for the summer, reports The Daily Mail.

Dr. Pallavi Bradshaw, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at AXA Health insurance, claims that you should wash your hair daily during the summer heatwave.

This might sound excessive to many people, but the expert emphasizes that it is extremely important for our health.

The thing is that in the summer, the level of pollen increases sharply, which can cause severe allergic reactions.

“Pollen can settle and stick not only to our clothes, but also to our body and hair. "So hay fever sufferers should shower, wash their hair thoroughly, and change their clothes every time they come back from the street," says Bradshaw.

Most people with hay fever know to stock up on antihistamines in the summer and stay home in case of an exacerbation. But not everyone knows that during such "pollen bombs" it is best to wash your hair every day.

“Showering reduces the risk of further irritation and can minimize the severity of hay fever symptoms,” Dr. Bradshaw explained. “It is recommended to use warm rather than hot showers to avoid drying out the skin and, where possible, use hypoallergenic soaps or shampoos.”

Bradshaw's advice comes shortly after Nigel Bearman, home cleaning expert and founder of Daily Poppins, advises not to dry clothes outside during the heatwave.

“Hanging your clothes, bedding or towels outside on high pollen days is a recipe for itchy eyes and a stuffy nose,” Bearman explained. The wet laundry acts like a sponge, soaking up all the pollen. It settles into the fibers and clings on as the fabric dries, meaning it'll end up in your bed, wardrobe and on your skin.”

He recommends drying laundry indoors, ideally near a window or with decent airflow.

“If you're short on space, use a collapsible drying rack in a well-ventilated room,” he added.
